Former President of Bulgaria
Born on 25 May 1952 in Plovdiv, Petar Stoyanov graduated from the Faculty of Law of Sofia University. After becoming a lawyer, he entered politics and joined the Union of Democratic Forces. In 1992, he served as Deputy Minister of Justice. In May 1993, he was elected Chair of the UDF Legal Committee. In 1994, he was elected a deputy to the 37th National Assembly and served as Deputy Chair of the UDF parliamentary group, and Vice Chair of the parliamentary Youth and Sports Committee. In 1995, he became Vice Chair of the UDF National Coordinating Council. In 1996, he was elected President as the coalition's candidate and served as President of Bulgaria from 1997 to 2002.
During his presidency, he strongly promoted national transformation, advocated market-oriented reforms, foreign investment and privatization, and actively coordinated Bulgaria's strategic path toward NATO and EU membership, laying an important foundation for the country's international integration. Known for an open and approachable leadership style, he was widely appreciated by the public and helped advance Bulgaria's modernization and internationalization.
