Former President of Cyprus
Born on May 20, 1931, in Famagusta, he is a senior Cypriot politician and economist. He served as President of the Republic of Cyprus from 1988 to 1993. During his term, he prioritized national economic development and advocated a federal state including both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. He helped the country emerge from negative economic growth and implemented reforms across multiple areas, laying a solid foundation for later rapid development. He also served as chief negotiator and led Cyprus's successful accession to the European Union.
After leaving the presidency, he remained active internationally, holding posts in various international organizations and receiving honors from multiple countries. He maintained a positive view of Cyprus–China relations, visited China, and participated in related events. He authored an autobiography titled A Modern Odyssey and continued to share governance ideas and historical experience through writing and international exchange.
