Former President of Romania
Born on 19 November 1939 in Tighina (now in Moldova), Emil Constantinescu served as President of Romania from 1996 to 2000. He began his studies at the University of Bucharest in 1956 in law, later switched to geology and geography, obtained a Ph.D. in geology, and became a mineralogy specialist. He served as a teaching assistant, professor, vice-rector and rector at the University of Bucharest, and from 1992 to 1996 served as Chair of the Romanian National Council of University Rectors.
After 1989, he entered political life. He founded the Romanian Civic Alliance Foundation and served as its vice president, and in 1992 became chair of the Democratic Convention. Elected President in 1996, he pursued anti-corruption measures, implemented market-oriented economic reforms, and promoted Romania's alignment with NATO and the European Union. After leaving office in 2000, he returned to teaching at the University of Bucharest. In 2003, he founded the People's Action Party and also served in various roles in international non-governmental organizations.
